Should my boyfriend have to phone when he is late ?

My boyfriend sometimes goes for a coffee and ends up 200 miles from home. I never get a call when he goes and he doesn't call or get home until hours after he says he will. We have been together for 2 yrs and I have left him twice because he thinks he is still single. I know he doesnt see other women and he is always on time for work and other appointments it is just me he cant seem to keep appointments with.

I had him checked out and the problem is that he is not cheating. The man is a hippie. He goes with his buddies and they smoke pot and argue about 70's music. I don't have a problem with that because I don't want to change him. I would like him to see himself as others see him. He was in a relationship where he was hurt by someone that he really loved and doesn't want to get hurt again. The time we do spend together is wonderful. Do I invite him to join this forum and tell him that I had him followed or should I just be happy with what I have ?
