Should he continue to contact her or realize it's over and move on?

My buddy has been seeing a girl for almost 2 years. They were engaged and set to get married this past weekend. With less the 1 week to go, the wedding was called off! His Fiance and her mother called it off. Both the my friend and his former fiance are very close with their families. There families are complete different ends financially and are a real burden on both kids. Basically the parents have helped the 2 of them come to this end point. It was not my friends decision to end the relationship it was his fiances, with probable influences from her mother. What does he do from here? He still contacts her all the time. She basically was the money and brains behind there relationship. but they did and maybe still do love each other.
