My wife and I are considering getting a new dog.

My wife misses the dog tremendously (we had to put her down 6 months ago). Our son feels that we shouldn't get another dog, because of needing to find someone to take care of it when we travel (which isn't that often) and, probably more important, that the death of the dog would be very difficult (we've lost four dogs in the past 25 years).
