When re-doing a room in your house, is it better to choose a piece of furniture first or the paint color?

We are redecorating our family room and will more than likely be changing pretty much everything. I think we should choose the couch first and base the rest of the decor (tables, rug, window treatments, paint) on that, but my husband wants to pick the paint color before we choose anything else.
