Can marrying a person with addictions work?

We laugh together, pray together, talk about everything, shelter each other, been through many ups and downs for 8 yrs now. For me it was love, for him it was friendship. Then it became love for him and he popped the question. I accepted but then the seriousness of his addiction just loomed like one tree in an empty field. Suddenly I saw them all quite clearly. I broke it off. He has health issues and now lost his job and is moving back near family. Me? Afraid to lose the one person I could totally be myself with.
