Was it wrong to call the police on my neighbors?

A few nights ago (It was a Saturday night) I went to bed at about 12:30am. As soon as I laid down I could hear the neighbors and their guests having a party in their backyard. There was no music but there were about 10-15 people in the backyard talking/laughing etc. I tried to ignore it for a while but they were so loud I could hear their conversations (including things like how much they paid hookers in Europe for blow jobs). I live in a nice neighborhood, lots of crazy strict rules about everything imaginable.

By 1am I decided I had had enough. I went to my window, opened it and yelled loud enough for them to hear, "It's 1am shut up or I am calling the cops!" A part guest yelled back "Sorry". The silence lasted for all of 15 seconds (literally) and started back up. I wanted to give them time to maybe take the party inside, so I waited until 1:15am.

I called the police (non emergency number of course) and told them the story. They said that they would send someone to look into it. They responded promtly and the noise stopped. The neighbors don't know that it was me, they just know it was someone in the building. I live in an small apartment building surrounded by houses. They live in a house near the building.

When I got home the other night they had posted notes on all the doors basically saying that they are going to try and make our lives difficult. Like I said before there are a ton of crazy stict rules in my neighborhood. A lot of the rules people don't know or don't follow. Usually as long as the broken rule doesn't affect someone negatively no one cares. They said that they will be watching us like hawks and will call the cops immediately if they find anything we have done wrong. This can be anything from not having the trash cans taken in by 6pm on trash day, to parking more than 6 inches from the curb, grass being above 4 inches in length, etc.

Was I wrong for calling the police? I feel terrible that now my neighbors are being "punished" because of what I did. Should I tell them that it was me that called the police and to leave the people in my building alone?
