Is 11 AM considered to be afternoon or morning?

My roommate and me were arguing about whether 11 AM was 11 in the afternoon or 11 in the morning. He thinks it is 11 in the afternoon and I just think he is retarded. The word "afternoon" means after 12. 11 is not after 12. Please agree with me so I can show him how stupid he is. lol
