Is my Mom right to not help me because I am not working?

I am a single mom and real estate agent. While I have always struggled with my finances the past year or two have been awful. I am getting assistance from a local charity to help pay my utilities and am on food stamps. I did graduate from college and just can't see that I should take a minimum wage job, espcially since I am 42 years old. I have a roommate that helps pay the rent which is a godsend. I recently had to ask my Mom for a loan and she basically went balistic on me for asking. It hurt me, as a mom I can't imagine denying my son help. And she can totally afford it. If I work full time at a min. wage job I won't be able to be with my son and I will still not be making the bills. What should I do?
