Is it ok for a live-in boy friend to stay out all night without calling his girlfriend?

My live-in boyfriend left at noon to go to his fathers house and work in his brothers auto-shop on his dads property. We agreed that on the day's he is working, he will call me if he's going to be later than 5pm. Well the other day he didn't call me and he was gone overnight. I made many attempts to telephone him, however, he never did answer his cell phone. He doesn't get good reception at his dad's, however, there is a house (lan line) he can use anytime he needs to. Did I have a right to be upset when he returned the next day at 10:30am ?
