Should I just give up?

Recently, my live in boyfriend and I decided to take a break. He was really stressed out from work and money issues, not talking much. I tried to be as supportive as possible, but He started yelling at me one day. I used to be in an abusive relationship and I had told him, I wouldn't put up with it. We talked calmly about our relationship and decided to take a break until he was less stressed. A couple of days later I asked if we were broken up. He said he didn't want to be in a relationship or see anyone right now, to focus on his life. But he wanted to be friends. I was trying to be friends. Then I found out he was going online for dating and telling people his last relationship went kaput and there was scary stuff involved, but he wouldn't say what, because he was a gentleman. So, should I just quit having any contact with him? Because right now I'm pretty hurt and don't understand why he lied.
