I think my husband is an alcoholic? How can I be sure?

I had a traumatising childhood with an alcoholic father, therefor I'm not sure if I'm right on this one, or I'm just being afraid. Fact is that my husmand loves to drink, on any ocasion, when he comes home from work, when we go visit someone. In fact that's why we go visiting people, because they have to drink-guys I mean-. We argue a lot about this, but he sais that he is embaressed not to drink when all his friends do, like he is not man enough. He actually hit me once when he was drunk, for no good reason. So, is it me, is it him or it's both of us? Please help me because I'm lost and I don't know how to deal with this anymore!
