Do you have to be married so long to receive alimony?

My husband and I have been married a little over a year. Usually I look at alimony as payment to the spouse for leaving you, however during he and I's marriage I paid all the bills and supported us financially. I heard he is going to apply for social security. We currently have a daughter in my aunt's guardianship and have been working with the court system to get custody of her which should happen in the next year. I definitely want child support. Is there any time limit in the marriage to receive the alimony payments?
I recieve SSI myself for an epileptic disorder which is under control by medicine.
