How can I stop myself from going on the defensive when my boyfriend is angry about something unrelated to me?

Whenever my boyfriend has a bad day, or something bad happens, he tends to forget that I'm on his side, and the way he acts makes me feel like he's blaming me for everything. I know that he's not, and I know that its completely unrelated to me, but how can I not take it personally, or not go on the defensive? I would just act like I'm not, but I'm horrible at hiding how I'm feeling at the moment,
