Help! My "friend" won't repay a loan I gave her...

My "friend" asked for a loan of $1,000 saying she would pay it back in a week, which she did. Two weeks later, she asked for a loan of $2,000 saying she would pay it back in a week. This was in 2006! (I believe it was a conscious manipulation). She is an artist. In 2008 she was moving overseas "forever" so I agreed to take one of her large paintings as compensation (I don't even like her art but wanted something for my money). However, she ultimately returned, and I told her I had no-where to hang the painting so we agreed that I would swap it for something else smaller. She took the painting back. However, my financial situation has changed significantly... should take her art as agreed, or am I able to say "sorry, my financial situation has changed, I need my money back?"

Thank you!
