Can herpes be dormant for 13 years???

My husband of 8 years had a rash 3 months ago. Said the doc told him it was shingles. Looked like herpes 2 to me. It was on his butt. Then 1 week ago I came down with the same thing but the culture said herpes. So friends say it can lay dormant for years.. Husband says he has never been unfaithful. I know i have not. I do not believe him and can hardly stand to look at him and he thinks I am being rediculous! Is this possible to not know you have this???
