Has anyone else had a similar experience and what should I do?

"I have been in a long distance relationship for the past 10 months. It began in January when someone I had a crush on contacted me after his ex of 6 years broke up with him. He contacted me 5 months after the break up. We spent a weekend together and then he came back 2 weeks later. It was at that time that I realized he was still in love with his ex. I didn't want to be part of a threesome so I asked him to leave. We still were in contact over the next 4 months, but I was careful not to initiate any of that. In May he began making efforts to move forward in our relationship. We took a trip to Mexico together and other smaller trips to see each other. Things seems to be moving forward. He was very attentive and present and very engaged in our relationship. I was laid off in April and always had a plan to relocate from the Midwest to the West. He lives out West, but he was not my main reason for moving. When my plans to move were becoming real I sensed that he was freaked out about it so I asked. He said he was excited and yes, freaked out. I asked if it would be helpful if we didn't talk for a while. Long story short it came out that he was still in love with his ex and still trying to process and that he considered me a friend and that I had too many balls I was juggling and that maybe the relationship ball should come out for now. I asked him why he didn't want to fight for our relationship and he said he didn't have the tools to do it. What the hell does that mean? We have not spoken for 2 weeks. He just had shoulder surgery and I did not call him.
