Should I have to keep this furniture for the rest of my life.? If not, how do I go about getting rid of it?

Two years ago, my husband's father drove a thousand miles to bring us some antique furniture that I really had no idea what condition it was in. He brought it to our house b/c he had to move out of his house and didn't have room for it. I didn't think at the time that I would have to keep it forever. My father in-law says it's been in the family for over a hundred years and is worth a lot (it's only worth what someone will pay for it). It comes from a home of two heavy smokers and the furniture needs repairs and refinishing. At the time, I had no dining room furniture. We had only been married for two years. I HATE THIS FURNITURE!!!!! My father-in-law still has no where to put it and he expects his only son to keep it in the family. I HATE THIS FURNITURE. I RESENT having to look at it everyday! It is ugly and non-funtional. I would never put my dishes in a coffin of cirgarrette smoke. My husband seems stuck in the middle. Do you think he should stand up for me and realize how miserable this is making me? Or do you think I should just deal with it and get over it?
