Is it possible to contract herpe's from your partner who says he was faithful?

My husband and I have been married for fourteen years, together for sixteen. After having some unusual symtoms my doctor ran a few test. One test came back posative for herpe's. I was dumbfounded. She told me my husband should to tested. He tested posative and said he had been in a short relationship before we met and after the relationship ended he said she told him she had herpe's. I have never been unfathful nor have I ever had symtoms before now. I have never known him to have any signs either now or ever. I have reason to suspect foul play. I don't beleive his story. Call me crazy!
