How do I go about getting money back loaned to a friend(ex boyfriend) 2 years ago who keeps promising he will

A man I was dating was desperate for money and I loaned it to him with the promise of paying me back right away. A month later he borrowed more out of desperation. Foolishly, I gave him $2,000 and have asked for it back quite a few times. I broke up with him and still did not get it back. I even mentioned paying me monthly. I have received nothing and am furious. Any ideas out there?????
