Do electrical appliances consume electricity when not operating (except for those with LEDs).

My vegan, tree-hugging daughter unplugs everything in the house because she says plugged in appliances, cell phone chargers, electronics, fans, etc. all waste power if they're plugged in. I say no power is used unless they're on.
