Can you wear a promise/virginity ring if you're not a virgin?

My boyfriend is 15 and he lost his virginity when he was nine. He's been with a lot of girls (and guys) sexually. I wear a promise ring and I've been trying to get him to wear one but he's like "You have to have virginity to wear a ring symbolizing that you're going to save it for someone!" Is he right?
