Simple battery/domestic violence?

My husband struck me on my face 4 times last week, this has been going on since 3 years(4 times on an avg a year), i finally called 911, he was arrested for a day and we have the hearing on 2nd april for the same. he is told not to contact us until then, have 6 year old autistic son of us with me. what should my say be in the hearing? should i have private lawyer ? he has kept one. somehow i m ok for him to come home and give a try to my marriage. am i being too hopeful..all this happening to me first time, please guide. i highly appreciate ur time and wud make a big difference in my life. thx
