Have you used internet dating and how did it go?

I've been thinking about trying out internet dating sites to meet people. I'm a fairly busy person living in a metropolis where traffic is awful, so meeting people (or getting places to just meet people) is a pain. I work until about 7-8pm usually. Internet dating would be a huge convenience if it works (and the person on the other end also believes so if they put up a profile and all that stuff) but I don't want to hook up with some crazy girl that likes to cry a lot and draw lots of attention, or even worse, a fake profile programmed by a bot. So I'm looking to get some real opinions about it from people that have tried it.
