My boyfriend's father is really cruel - what can I do?

I've been with my boyfriend about 8 months, and I love him so much - but his father is a real a**hole. He's mean, rude and treats my boyfriend with no respect whatsoever. I've tried telling my boyfriend that he shouldn't put up with it, but he bears it silently. I hate seeing him so upset. What can I do?
