Is it wrong for me to ask for the stuff I bought him back?

In ten months I spent over four thousand dollars on my ex through buying him food, clothes, an XBOX36O... But after we broke up, I asked kindly if I can have all of it back, or at least some. He refused saying that they are HIS property. Umm... am I missing something here? Wasn`t I the one who bought it for him in the first place? Isn`t it MY hard earned money?
