Should I keep in contact with an old boss who in I realize was an incredible micro manager/control freak?

This boss taught me alot, but I realize in hindsight was incredibly controlling and manipulative. The whole reason I no longer work there is because I was laid off, and it was not because of performance, but the econonmy. I am torn between remaining friends or not..... I realize now that in many ways I was not appreciated, but do on some levels like this person.
