Where can I meet new people when I work from home and I don't know anyone in the area?

I just moved to a new town and I just don't know how to meet anyone. I'd like to begin dating but not that soon. I just need to find some girlfriends and I don't know how to go about it cos it seems everywhere I go everyone seems turned off to meet new people. How do I approach them?
