my boyfriend has alot of dept he owes, will it effect me if he goes bankrupt then we get married?

He has been saying for 3 yrs that he is going to do this. He wants to get married and says he'll do it later. He says it wont effect me since it isnt in my name and it was before us. I told him im not getting married untill he get his finances in order. will a bankrupcy effect me if he does it, then we get married????
