What's with always holding hands?

First of all don't get me wrong, I don't mind holding hands with my girlfriend at all. I'm just wondering where this need to hold hands in public comes from. I mean I don't feel the urge to hold hands when we're out so why does she? She seems pretty confident in herself and in our relationship. So is it just that she likes it or is there more to it?
