The Dreaded Smell Test (Part 2)!

Side 2
Side 1 says... How do you know when food has gone bad? According to my beloved, Penny, the best indication is the "sell by" date. If we're even close to that date, the food goes in the trash. But I've tried to convince her (often to no avail) that it's also important to smell food -- that's part of the reason we have noses, right? -- because those dates are just "sell by" not "EAT BY OR YOU WILL PERISH." I would never force Penny to eat something she didn't want to, but am I wrong to get upset when she throws out food that I feel is perfectly good??

Side 2 says... Oh man, people are really going to think we have problems with smell :) So, here's my side on this one. (Can y'all tell we're newlyweds??) I don't believe in throwing out perfectly good food either. I think Stinky's exaggerating a little when he says that anything close to the expiration date goes in the trash. But I'm curious about what other people think about, say, eating grilled chicken that's been sitting in the fridge for a week. (I pass on it after 3-4 days). Or yogurt a week past its due date. Or bread with whtie fuzz on it. I think Stinky sometimes takes it to extremes, because he really, really doesn't want to waste food. I get it. But I'd rather throw out food than eat something that might make me sick!
