Should we buy a house now or should we wait?
This is a bit of a long one, I'm confused on this bombshell my boyfriend of 2 and a half years (we have been living together for most of this time) has dropped on me. In the next 6 months he wants to us buy a house. His reasoning behind this makes a lot of sense, but I'm not 100% sure. His idea is that due to the Global Credit Crisis, housing costs in the city we live which have traditionally unaffordable are now affordable, plus with the increased first home buyer's grant we don't need a large deposit. I do want to want to buy a house, however I'm not sure this is the best time for us to do so.
Firstly, I always felt that a couple should be married or even engaged before buying a house, as it can be very messy should things not work out. I have tried talking to him about this concern and all I want is a justification on why we should do it before he is ready to make that commitment to me regarding our relationship; the reply I get the few times I bring it up is that I need to stop pressuring him to ask me to marry him.
Secondly, I have been stupid in about 5 or so years which some of it I have to still sort out I got myself into credit card debt which has defaulted and I am yet to pay. My thoughts on this it to sort this out before we buy a house, however he is saying we have to buy the house now – so meaning that it won't be able to be in my name, which I can deal with if we both get legal advice and discuss it together. It appears that he already has got his legal advice before even letting me know about this, and I have yet to get it. I am getting told I have to sort all this out in the next week so we can apply for the loan (small chance I can get my name on it).
There are a few other concerns but they are the main ones. I feel I bit like I might get pushed into this decision before I am ready, and I feel it is a decision we should make together, however it feels like he has made the decision already and it's a case of do I agree with him.
