If he's so confident talking to girls why was he awkward around me?

This guy (who isn't supposedly a player but has a certain type he likes) seems to get a lot of girls to like him and is super confident and very liberal.yet, I learned this AFTER my first impression of him. When we met he seemed rather shy and awkward. Yet, I am shy and I MYSELF probably came off as awkward and he responded in kind. Yet, usually very confident people can make shy people more comfortable and there is no awkwardness (which is why most of my frieinds are super outgoing). Anyway, why would he act weird and always stare at me and sometimes ignore me if he's so confident???
