Does Couples Counseling Really work

Me and my fiancee have issue that we carried over frompass relationships rather it be family, friend, and/or foe we have made attacks at each other and they all seem to be based on the pass of our lives. We are considering counseling but don't want to spend the money and it still end well at least i dont so Does counseling really work and please keep your thoughts to yourself if they are negative Thank You. We are a couple that really love each other just hitting a rough time now.
