Does friendship and Business Mix?

I work in a room with only three other people. One of my co-workers is retiring in October. We honestly don't need a replacement because with the economy the way it's been, business has slowed significantly. However, my supervisor has told me that the big boss wants her to think this hiring through because he has more work for her to do. It's been months and we haven't really discussed this. (Me and the co-workers). So she comes up this morning and says "I just had a great idea"! We can hire Janet part time. Ok, now "Janet" is her friend. Janet is also retired. Also, Janet spends every weekend together with my boss. Why in the world would you mix business and friendship? I do NOT feel comfortable with this idea at all. Should I be ok with this?
