Should my Wife side with me or the Police?

After a taxi that I am sitting in with my 3 yo son is involved in a minor taxi/bicycle matter....the typical 100+ Shanghai crowd gather. I manage to get my son inside a police car for his safety....with police actively trying to keep me out of the police car! I am taken home and my Shanghai wife refuses to translate a letter to the police asking for return of my foriegn passport saying "I am a Chinese national.....the Police said 1) that people were laughing at them because they could not control me 2) you hit a police car window 3) a police still feels a pain in his chest where you hit him" There were no charges even suggested by police. Can I have a reality check?
